Erectile Dysfunction (ED) is a diagnosis bantered about constantly in television and magazine advertisements. Yet, it is rarely defined. There is a reason for this. The drug companies soon realized that the market for medications that diminish this problem is much larger for individuals who don't really have Erectile Dysfunction, but simply want to improve their sexual performance. So what is Erectile Dysfunction? There is no clear definition. One definition is: The inability to attain and sustain an erection of sufficient rigidity for sexual activity. While this may seem reasonable, does an individual who attempts intercourse 4 times in an evening and fails the 4th time have Erectile Dysfunction? Obviously not. He just has unrealistic expectations. Yet, medication may enhance this individual's performance. Another definition (used by this INFOMED) is the loss of an erection at least 25% of the time during intercourse. Again, what does this mean? If you are having intercourse several times a day, this could be perfectly normal. Before Viagra, even porn stars had this problem. That doesn't mean they had ED. This INFOMED further refines the definition of Erectile Dysfunction as the inability to perform sexually for your age. It will point out if there is a possible medical reason for either ED or decreased performance. Patients should not expect to have the same sexual performance at age 50 as they had at age 25. This is not Erectile Dysfunction, anymore than the inability to jump as high at age 50 than at age 25 is Jumping Dysfunction.
